In my last post, I promised to give you an outline of the Garden of God, to enhance your study of the subject. Listed below are some of the key facts about the Garden.

The Garden was a place specifically created for man ( Gen 1:26, 2:8-9). Spiritually Eden symbolises a rich and fertile ground of unbroken fellowship. It was a perfect environment for man to live in. It is important for us to know how God originally intended us to live, as this is the type of environment we need for a happy and fulfilled life.

As you read the points below, ask yourself whether you experience these characteristics in your life. If like me, you feel that there is a number of areas where you are not experiencing all that God has provided, why not make your prayer, “Lord, help me to live as you originally created me to live”. The Garden was:

1. A place of relationship. Three types of relationship are found here: a) Relationship between God and man. Gen 3:10 b) Relationship between man and woman. Gen 2: 23-25 c) Harmonious living between man and the animals. Gen 2:20

2. A place of joy, gladness, delight and enjoyment. Eden means delight. Isaiah 51:3

3. A place of abundance. Gen 2:9-14, 1:29-30, 2:19. The Garden offered beauty and sustenance.

4. A place of material and spiritual blessing. Gen 1:28

5. A place of responsibility. Responsibility to be fruitful, multiply and till (work) the land. Gen 1:28, “:19-20

6. A place of authority, power and dominion. Gen 1:26

7. A place to resist sin through obedience. Man was given a choice on whether to fully open God or not. Satan, and thus the potential for sin was present in the Garden

8. A place of safety. Garden means ‘guard-in’. Adam and Eve were ‘guarded-in’ with God. The Garden was fenced in. Ezekiel 36:25

9. A place of fertility where things grow. Gen 2:10, 3:20. In the OT, Eden was a symbol of great fertility, a place where things grew. The Garden was well watered. Gen 13:10, Isaiah 58:11

10. A place of total dependence upon God. Gen 1:16-17. Man was expected to depend only on God

11. A place of perfect opportunity to develop one’s talents. Place where Adam could work in partnership with God

12. A place where the tree of life was present. The tree of life represented long life. Eating of the tree of life would have prolonged their physical lives

13. A place where all one’s needs are met. A place of provision. Gen 2:8

14. A place of enhanced relationship with God. Interaction with God Himself. Gen 3:10

15. A place of nearby danger. Eden was not a place where there was an absence of danger; it was a place where in the midst of danger, there was safety. Satan had access to the Garden. He probably knew the Garden better than man ( Ezekiel 28:3)

16. A place of transparency. Adam and Eve were naked and did not know it. They only became conscious of their nakedness after they sinned. Gen 3:7-8, 2:25. Transparency means the relationship could be out in the open without any hidden shadow separating them.

17. A place where life was birthed. God breathed into Adam. Divine and human life was birthed. Gen 3:16, 1:18

18. A place of holiness. We know that without holiness, no man can see God

19. A place of diversity – many different types of animals, plants etc. Gen 1:24-25

20. A place where one could hear God’s instructions. God gave Adam and Eve many instructions. E.g. Gen 2:16, 1:28, 2: 24 etc

21. A place of work. Gen 2: 15, 9-10. The Garden was subject to natural laws and needed constant work. The Hebrew meaning of the word tend or dress is to work. The Garden needed to be cultivated and maintained and this required hard work.

22. A place where there is no loneliness. Gen 2:18. A place where there are helpers. You are not supposed to live in your garden alone

23. A place of orderliness. Orderly living

24. A place of fruitfulness. Gen 1:28. To be fruitful means to be productive, yield increase, succeed and to reproduce your kind

25. A place specifically created for man to live. Gen 1:28

26. A place of love. Love between God and man and between man and woman

27. A place with the melody of thanksgiving. Isaiah 51:3
